Optical Metrology Services

The Applied Photonic Department has been involved in several COST (Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) European projects, mainly focusing on measurement technologies, reliability, as well as on optical fibre (cf. the "Project" page : COST n° 208, 241, 246, 265).

Two such collaborative projects are still in progress :

  • COST 270 : "Study of the reliability of optical fibre components and devices for systems and networks" ;
  • COST 299 : "Development of new optical fibres for coping with the technological challenges facing the Information Society".

The department has a recognized expertise in the field of optical metrology and can propose various types of services :

  • A comprehensive maintenance programme entitled "A light on your dark Fibres", based on a characterization programme in the field of optical networks (LAN, MAN and WAN; single and multiple mode fibres) :
    • Optical reflectometry in the temporal field (OTDR) with measures at 850, 1300, 1310, 1550 and 1625 nm ;
    • Chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) ;
    • Spectral attenuation on the whole CWDM spectrum.

Advantages of the "A light on your dark fibres" programme :

  • Independent expertise ;
  • Tests and measurements complying with international norms (IEC, ITU, EIA/TIA, CENELEC, etc.) ;
  • A detailed report including the whole measurement data per fibre and per section is delivered.

The various measurements can also be ordered separately, according to the specific needs of each company.

  • Test and reliability studies of subcomponents and optical WDM (C- and L-band), as well as fibre network
  • Laboratory characterization of passive and active optical components
  • Periodic calibration of optical equipment: OTDR, optical spectrum analysers, powermeters, measurements on polarisation dispersion mode (PMD) and chromatic dispersion (CD), bandwidth characterisation, etc.
  • Calibration according to international standards.
